Starting slowly prevents failure

Over 40% of all the energy consumed worldwide goes into industry. Two thirds of it is consumed by motors. A not insignificant proportion of these do not run optimally. The wear and tear caused by frequent starting and stopping causes unplanned downtime and shortens the operational life. There must be a better way of doing this. And it can be: with softstarters from ABB.

Industrial motors account for some 28 percent of the world's electricity consumption. It is therefore safe to say that reliable motor operation is crucial to our daily lives. The uptime and lifetime of motors is significantly improved when full-load motors are equipped with softstarters. As the name suggests, softstarters ensure smooth starting and stopping of motors. This optimises new motors and gives existing motors a new lease of life. A soft starter is therefore a 'motor saver' for every industry - from the food and water purification industry to the maritime sector. A solution that may be a small change, but that also has a big impact. ABB proves this with the motor starter series PSE, PSR and PSTX - a complete range offering a suitable solution for every motor application.

Compact PSR series

The PSR softstarter series is the most compact. This series includes a simple and at the same time extremely reliable starting solution that offers all basic softstarter features. The PSR series proves its value especially in applications with many starts per hour. The electrically robust softstarter is suitable for applications with up to 100 starts per hour.  In addition, it is the perfect solution for installations where only limited space is available. Due to its small size, very compact start solutions are possible. When combined with a motor protection switch, PSR provides a compact starting solution including overload and short circuit protection - much more compact than is possible e.g. with complex star-delta starters.

Efficient PSE series

The sophisticated PSE series combines optimum efficiency with considerable cost and energy savings. Various built-in motor protection functions ensure a  perfectly safe application. In addition, the built-in torque control offers an ideal solution against water hammer, thus significantly reducing the load on pumps and water pipes.  Another distinguishing feature is the unprecedented ease of use. With a luminous, language-independent display and a highly intuitive user interface, the PSE series is set up in less than 15 seconds. The softstarter has built-in Modbus functionality, making it easy to integrate into standard production or automation systems.

Elektro Internationaal - Unburdening with Vendor Managed Inventory
Optimising internal logistics is often a challenge for panel builders, from grab stock management to getting a grip on delivery times. Especially when production is spread across multiple sites, like at Elektro Internationaal (EI) in Woerden. In 2016, the company already took a big step, together with itsme Connected Business, at their batch production site. This was related to the introduction of Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) in the form of a 2BIN system. In the near future, EI expects to start the construction of new premises, whereby all activities will be brought under one roof. At that point, the logistics for the entire production will also be optimised.
