Master or slave: the Modbus RTU communication module

Eaton introduces the Modbus RTU module to complement the range of communication options for the easyE4 control relay, allowing the mini-PLC to be used as both a master and slave unit.

Client and server functionality

The new Modbus RTU module for the easyE4 offers yet another option for flexibly integrating the control relay into different communication structures: In addition to an easyNet interface, via the programming port, the basic device offers Modbus TCP client and server functionality. This means that the integrated Modbus TCP interface can also be used when a Modbus RTU module is connected in parallel. As a result, the easyE4 can easily collect data from field-level measurement devices using the Modbus RTU and transmit the data to higher-level control solutions via Modbus TCP.

Master or slave

The Modbus RTU communication module and the network are configured with the programming software easySoft 7 from version 7.40 onward. This also sets up the mini-PLC as a Modbus RTU master or slave. When set as a master, the easyE4 has access to the process data, status information and parameter settings of the connected Modbus RTU modules. Data acquisition and programming can be performed independent of brand, which means that third-party Modbus RTU devices can also be integrated.

Uniform appearance

The communication module is easily installed via a special connector on the left side of the easyE4 base unit. With a width of only 2 HP (35 mm), its dimensions are similar to those of the other slim easyE4 expansion modules. This makes control panel design simpler and more compact and ensures a uniform appearance. If necessary, additional expansion modules can also be connected to the right side of the base unit.

Siemens SIPLUS
The availability of machines and plants is a basic requirement for productivity. In order to minimize unplanned downtimes, it is necessary to detect the sources of error at an early stage. This is exactly where SIPLUS CMS Condition Monitoring Systems come in: they continuously monitor the condition of mechanical components of your machines – even throughout the entire plant. SIPLUS CMS therefore represents an important step toward the digital factory, where all the players including machines, products and people along the value chain will be networked. SIPLUS CMS working together with MindSphere – the cloud-based, open IoT operating system from Siemens – opens up completely new possibilities. The powerful cloud platform is designed for analyzing large quantities of data and enables machine parks all over the world to be monitored for service purposes in order to reduce their downtimes.
